Coaching
The main focus of the Eastern Suburbs LAC is to run club competitions on Friday nights during the season (for more information on dates see our ESLAC 2019_20 Calendar). The Friday nights are about participation but the competition between club members does a great job of preparing ESLAC athletes for the inter-club meets that start with the State Relay Championships in November.
While basic instruction is provided for most events on Friday nights, there is insufficient time to provide in depth coaching. For athletes who want individual instruction on improving their techniques, ESLAC provides professional coaches on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and on Friday nights from 5:00pm before our regular Little As meet.
When and Where is Coaching Available?
ESLAC provides a subsidised extra coaching program midweek at ES Marks for athletes U8 and up. From 5pm at ES marks on Friday (before the start of competition) will have 5 specialist coaches taking hurdles (Mal), sprints (Leo), long/middle distance (Ben), throws (Jemima) and long jump (Sara). ESLAC will also have midweek coaching available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be sprints/hurdles coaching with Mal Baker on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm for U8, U9, and U10 and from 4:30-5:30pm for U11-U17.

How Much Does Coaching Cost?
To be a part of our extra midweek or pre-Little A’s meet coaching program there is a charge of $150 for the season for Tuesday night coaching, $150 for the season for Thursday night coaching and $150 for Friday night coaching, cash payments can be made at the barbeque area on Friday night or you can make an online payment to – Account Name: Eastern Suburbs Little Athletics BSB: 012241 Account Number: 254 095 775. When paying, put your name and the night for which you are paying in the comments field, for example – $300 Tue/Fri H. Bolt. If there is insufficient room in the comments field for your name then use your ESLAC registration number. While entry to ES Marks is free on Friday nights, Centennial Park Trust charges a small entrance fee to each athlete on Monday – Thursday for use of the facility. ESLAC coaches are available for private one on one sessions at other times as well as for smaller training squad sessions. Ask the coaches about the costs of their private sessions.

Meet the Coach
Mal Baker has been Head Coach at Eastern Suburbs Little Athletics since 2000. He holds a Level 4 Specialist Coaching certificate, one of the highest accreditations available, and focuses on Sprints, Hurdles, Throws, Jumps and Multi-events. He has individually coached numerous athletes from ESLAC to State and National honours and has taken athletes to World Championship and even Olympic competitions. Mal also coaches numerous schools and groups and has been used many times by Little Athletics NSW to run coaching clinics and pre-season promotions. He was one of the two coaches annually appointed to the LANSW State team for the three years, 2000-03 and the team won the national title each of those years. In his spare time, Mal enjoys boxing and, in 2013, won the light-heavyweight masters (over 40) division of the Ringside World Championships in the USA – the biggest amateur boxing tournament in the world.
