Our Friday night is back, and with ES Marks under renovation, we have moved to McKay Oval in Centennial Park for the rest of this season. The BBQ is ready, and all of the uniforms have arrived. We also have our East Athletics Training shirts for sale for $25. The Zone team gave them their seal of approval last weekend with their awesome performances.
There are no points this week as it is our first week at McKay Oval. We also have a few limitations, in that we are not allowed to offer Javelin or Discus. So our program will be altered but with two straight tracks and the circular track, we put together a great program which you can now download. The ESLAC McKay Oval Week A Feb 4, 2022 program will differ from the calendar as we cannot complete all of the events at McKay Oval. Hurdles will now be on each week at McKay, and we will utilise the long jump pit, shot put and high jump options. Hurdles on the grass will be great for our younger athletes to help build their confidence.
- Our Tots to Under 8s program is from 1730-1830
- Our U9s to U17s program is from 1830-1945
- Please just line up at the relevant age flag positioned on the field to enable the progam to commence
Our usual Friday night coaching will occur from 1730-1820 across hurdles, sprints and Long Jump for those that have paid the coaching levy.
Zone Championships
We had 103 Athletes enter the Zone Championships and the athletes demonstrated how talented they are. We have many athletes who automatically qualified for the Regional Championships. Watching some of the finals, it was fantastic to see Easts win final after final. In many cases, we were top 3 and in one case, we had 5 Easts boys in the U11 100m final with James winning it. A huge thanks to the parents and carers for supporting the athletes over two long and hot days of competition. The results also show how much benefit the athletes get from the coaching. So thank you Mal, Leo, Jemima and Maxim.
Our Zone records are very good and most often were set by State Champions and/or National Champions over the last 50 years. So breaking a zone record is no easy feat. We finished top 2 in the 10 Girls 60m Hurdles with Marnie and Chloe both breaking the zone record. We also had Aria win 11 Girls 80m hurdles in a zone record, Harvey win the 11B boys 80m hurdles in a zone record and Rory win 12 B 80m hurdles in a zone record. Chloe broke a 22 year old 10 girl high jump record, Marnie broke the 10 Girls 100m record and Capri and Marnie broke the 10 Girls 200m record. Capri also broke the 10 G long jump record. This means that across Marnie, Capri and Chloe in the 10 Girls, they broke zone records in the 60M hurdles, 100m, 200m, Long Jump and High jump. In three of these events, two of them broke the record. They also won the discus and 400m. This is quite an incredible feat for these talented young athletes.
If you watch our athletes practice hurdles on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, you can see the skill and improvement. We had finalists in just about every age group, many top three finishes and in some cases, Easts finished 1,2 and 3. In terms of 1st places, we had Nicholas winning the 8 boys Hurdles, Billie the 9 Girls, Marnie the 10 girls, Sam the 10 boys, Aria the 11 Girls, Harvey the 11 Boys, Rory the 12 boys and Emmanuel the 13 boys. This shows the skill of our athletes and Mal as the Hurdles coach.
We also won the Junior Girls relay with Bille, Marnie, Aria and Elizabeth winning easily with great changes. The Senior Girls relay was second by the smallest of margins, with Lola, Eliette, Zoe and Eden again changing beautifully. Our Junior boys should have won easily but showed that it all comes down to the changes.
Finally a special mention to Olive Clarke our under 7 girl who won 3 medals on the weekend. Whilst U7s don’t go to Regionals it was great to see Olive’s impressive medal haul.
This is just a small summary of an incredible weekend of results, here are the full results:
